If you have changed something that affects scoring, for example a question's point value, an answer's points, a Calculation, a rating scale, or a Suppress Scoring setting, and an existing completed response is still showing the old score in the report, this is expected behavior.
Why this happens
The scoring engine in Brilliant Assessments runs at the moment a response is finished (when the respondent clicks Finish on the last section). The calculated scores, rating outcomes, and any calculation results are stored against that response at that point.
When you later change a scoring rule:
- New responses completed after the change automatically use the new rules.
- Existing completed responses keep the values that were calculated when they were finished. The system does not automatically reprocess them.
This applies whenever you change anything that affects how a score is computed, including:
- Question or Answer point changes.
- Adding or editing a Calculation.
- Rating scale threshold or label changes.
- Toggling Suppress Scoring on an answer.
- Segmentation changes.
How to fix it
To update an existing response so it reflects the new scoring, you need to re-trigger the scoring engine by re-finishing the response.
- Open the response from the Responses screen.
- Click through each section of the response until you reach the last section, where the Finish button appears.
- Click Finish. The system re-runs the scoring engine and updates the stored values for that response.
How to verify the recalculation worked
To confirm the response has been recalculated with the new rules:
- Open the response.
- Click the hamburger menu at the top left.
- Choose Show Calculations (or Show Score) to view the updated values.
If the values now match what you expect based on the new scoring rules, the recalculation has been applied successfully. You can then regenerate the report for that response and the report will reflect the new scoring.
Bulk recalculation
There is no self-service bulk "recalculate all responses" function in the platform. Each response must be re-finished individually. However, the Brilliant Assessments support team can run a bulk recalculation internally if you have a large number of responses to update.
-
More than 10 responses to update: email support@brilliantassessments.com to request a bulk recalculation. In your request, please specify:
- Which assessment needs the recalculation.
- What needs to be updated: scores, calculations, or both.
- More than 100 responses: the recalculation takes longer to run, so the team may schedule it for the weekend or another low-traffic window to avoid affecting other users.
Where possible, it is still best to finalize your scoring rules and Calculations before inviting respondents, so a bulk recalculation is not needed.
