Brilliant Assessments has several features that group, tag, or segment responses, and they are easy to confuse because they overlap. This article explains what each one is for and helps you pick the right one. For a full side-by-side feature grid, see Tailoring Assessments for Different Audiences.
The five features at a glance
- Classifier. An attribute, such as Department or Seniority, that tags a response based on a question answer (or the assessment). It is used to benchmark, and to split and filter data and charts in reports. See Using Classifiers.
- Role. A label assigned to respondents within a cohort, such as Self, Manager, or Peer in a 360. Roles differentiate participants, can show different parts of the assessment, send tailored emails, and split or filter cohort data. See Managing Cohort Roles.
- Driver. A switch that shows or hides parts of one assessment for different audiences. Drivers can be set at the organization, cohort, or respondent level. See Using Drivers for Conditional Logic.
- Customer Type. A setting that personalizes the emails, site text, and report a respondent receives. It is set by a question, a role, or a calculation. See Using Customer Types.
- Organization. A hierarchical structure that categorizes responses by client, partner, or business unit. It controls manager access, branding, allotments, and organization-specific values. See Managing Organizations.
Which one should I use?
- Use a Classifier when you want to segment, benchmark, split, or filter your report data by an attribute (for example, comparing scores by department or location). A Classifier changes how data is reported, not what the respondent sees or receives.
- Use a Role when you are running a cohort (360 or group/team) and need to distinguish the people taking part, send them different emails, show them different questions, or break results down by participant type.
- Use a Driver when different audiences should see different questions or sections from the same assessment, and you want to switch that content on or off rather than build separate assessments.
- Use a Customer Type when the same assessment should send a different email, show different completion text, or deliver a different report depending on who the respondent is or how they answered.
- Use an Organization when you need to group responses by client or partner, restrict which responses a manager can see, brand responses and reports per client, or allocate and sell responses.
Still not sure?
These features give you an overview of what is possible, but there is rarely a single correct choice. Depending on how you want to launch and administer your assessments, and the workflow you need, you might use one of these features on its own or several of them together to achieve your goal.
If you have a specific need and are not sure which feature, or which combination, is the best fit, please email support@brilliantassessments.com. The Customer Success team can advise you on the right approach and the best way to set it up for your situation.
