There are two ways to generate the next iteration for a cohort: let the system generate it automatically based on your iteration schedule, or trigger it manually from the cohort's Iterations tab.
Option 1 - Automatic generation (based on Cohort Iteration settings)
If you have configured your Cohort Iteration with a schedule, the system will generate the next iteration on its own when the time arrives.
The schedule is controlled by these fields on the iteration record (Assessment Settings > Cohort tab > Cohort Iterations > Edit):
- Days From Previous Iteration - how many days after the previous iteration before the next one is created.
- Date Rule - whether the countdown starts from the previous iteration's creation date or its completion date.
- Respondent Generation Option - how respondents are handled for the new iteration (carried over, re-specified, or copied for updating). See What is the difference between the Respondent Generation Options for follow-up iterations? for the four options.
Once these are saved, no further action is required. The system handles the iteration generation and email sending on the scheduled day.
Option 2 - Manual generation (trigger immediately)
You can also force the next iteration to be created right now, regardless of the schedule. This is useful when you want to start a new iteration ahead of the planned date, or for a one-off iteration without an automated schedule.
- From the Cohorts page, locate the first iteration of the cohort. Search by subject or assessment name if needed.
- Click View to open the cohort details.
- Go to the Iterations tab.
- Scroll to Next Iteration Generation Date and set it to today's date (or a date in the past). A future date will schedule it; a current or past date generates it immediately.
- Click Save.
The system creates the next iteration straight away. It appears as a new cohort on the Cohorts page, with respondents generated according to your Respondent Generation Option.
After the new iteration is created:
- Review respondents on the new iteration's Respondents tab. You can remove anyone who is no longer participating or add new team members.
- Click Send Invitations to send out the emails. New responses are created and appear on the Response List.
