An Individual Assessment is the simplest way to use Brilliant Assessments: you build an assessment and send it to one person to complete.
If you need multiple respondents, roles, or group-level reporting, you will want a cohort assessment instead. See: How To Set Up Group/Team Cohorts.
Before you start: This guide focuses on Individual Assessments only. If you are brand new to the platform, follow the full recommended pathway first: Quick Start Guide.

What you'll build
Every assessment has two main parts:
- The assessment content (sections, subsections, questions, and answers)
- The output (typically a feedback report and/or results dashboard)
You can start from the default template assessment and modify it to suit your needs.
Step-by-step: Build and launch an Individual Assessment
-
Create (or copy) your assessment
Use the assessment list to add a new assessment (copies from your template). Read more: Managing Assessments -
Build or customize the assessment in the Builder
Update sections, subsections, questions, and available answers. Read more: Designing Assessments in the Builder -
Configure key settings
Common items include assessment settings, ratings, and graphics. Read more: Assessment Settings -
Customize your output (report and/or results dashboard)
Choose how you want participants to receive results and configure your output.- Feedback report: Feedback Report Building Overview
- Results dashboard: Results Dashboards
-
Set up your email templates
Update the email templates used to invite participants and deliver any completion messages. Read more: Email Templates
Test your assessment
We recommend creating a test response before you send your assessment to real participants. The response and feedback report regenerate as you make changes to the underlying assessment.
The easiest way to test is from the Response List screen: Read more: Response List.
For detailed field-level guidance when creating a response record: Read more: Response Add/Edit.
Send to an individual and collect responses
Once you are happy with your testing, you can start collecting live responses.
Common ways to send an Individual Assessment:
-
Create a response record for the participant (recommended for 1:1 sending).
The system can email the participant a link to complete the assessment. Go to Responses - Add Response -
Share an External ID link so the participant can start “on the fly”.
(Your URL format depends on your site and assessment configuration.). Go to Assessment Settings - General tab (this ID must be unique to that assessment). - Use your website, CRM, or integrations to create responses via API.
For full instructions on sharing methods: Read more: Sharing Assessments to Get Responses.
