There is no limit on the number of calculations you can add to a subsection. However, the number and complexity of calculations affect how quickly the assessment and its report are processed, so where you place them matters.
When calculations run
Calculations run at a different point depending on the Section Type of the section they are in:
| Section Type | When the calculations run | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Section | When the respondent clicks Next to leave that page | The respondent waits while the calculations are processed before the next page loads. |
| Individual Report | After the respondent completes the assessment, when the report is generated | The respondent is not delayed. The report takes longer to generate and is delivered by email. |
Recommended placement
As a guide, more than about 10 calculations in a single Normal Section can cause a noticeable delay when the respondent moves to the next page. The exact point depends on how complex the calculations are.
If your assessment uses many calculations, or complex ones:
- Create a section at the end of the assessment for the calculations.
- In the Assessment Builder, hover over the section, click Edit, and open the Options tab.
- Set Section Type to Individual Report, then click Save.
- Move the calculations that are only needed for the report into that section.
Sections marked as Individual Report do not display to the respondent. For details, see Managing Assessment Sections.
Note: Calculations that the respondent needs while taking the assessment, such as a validation or a value used in conditional logic, must stay in a Normal Section, because Individual Report sections are not processed until the report is produced.
The order calculations run in
Calculations within a subsection run in position order, from the lowest position number to the highest.
If one calculation uses the result of another, place them in separate subsections, with the dependent calculation in a later subsection. For example, if Calculation B uses the output of Calculation A, put Calculation A in one subsection and Calculation B in the next. Placing both in the same subsection is not reliable, even when Calculation A has the lower position number.
