Segmentations provide a flexible way to group questions or answers across your assessment, allowing for additional layers of scoring, rating, and reporting beyond the standard response/section/subsection structure.

Key Features of Segmentations:
Flexible Grouping: You can tag questions or answers with one or more segmentations, creating thematic groupings that can span different sections of your assessment. This is particularly useful for analyzing themes that are addressed across various parts of the assessment.
Automated Scoring and Reporting: Once segmentations are set up, the system automatically calculates scores for each segmentation. These scores can be incorporated into both feedback and cohort reports.
Linking segmentations to questions or answers
If implemented, segmentations can be linked to either:
- Questions or calculations, regardless of where it appears in the assessment. This is the most common set up.
- Answers. Answer segmentations allow for each answer to a question to be linked to a different segmentation.
Each question, calculation or answer can be linked to as many segmentations as you want.
Set up instructions
Step 1: Enable Segmentations
Go to Site Settings > Features:
- Under General tab, select Use Segmentation > Save
- A Segmentations tab will appear
- Go to Segmentations tab to start creating Segmentation Group and Segmentations
Step 2: Create Segmentation Groups and Segmentations
Navigate to the Segmentations tab in your Site Settings.
Note: You need to create a segmentation group first before adding segmentations. Segmentation groups create an extra layer of reporting - for example, you can create a bar chart that pulls in all segmentations within a group or return a score for an entire group.
Step 2a - Create a Segmentation Group
- Click Manage Groups.
- Click Add Segmentation Group.
- Name your group (e.g., "Competencies") and fill out the required fields. For full field descriptions, see Segmentation Group Settings.
- Click Save.
Step 2b - Create Segmentations
- Click Manage Segmentations to return to the segmentations list.
- Click Add Segmentation.
- Enter the segmentation name (e.g., "Communication Skills").
- Select the segmentation group this segmentation belongs to (e.g., "Competencies").
- Click Save.
Repeat Step 2b for each segmentation you need. For full field descriptions, see Segmentation Settings.
Tip: Navigate between the segmentations and segmentation group lists by clicking the Manage Groups / Manage Segmentations button at the top.
Step 3: Link your segmentations
There are two ways to do this.
- Via the Segmentations button in the assessment builder. Read more here.
-
By editing each question> and selecting the segmentation from the list in the Options tab.
Tip: Hold down the Ctrl button to select/deselect multiple segmentations.

Segmentation List
The Segmentation List appears when you enter the Segmentation tab from Site Settings. From here you can:
- Add a new Segmentation.
- Manage Segmentation Groups that can be used to filter Segmentations on reports. Segmentation Groups means that you can have many separate groups of segmentation all measuring and reporting different things. You can have Segmentations that are not members of any group.
Segmentation Add/Edit
- Give the Segmentation a name
- Number the Segmentation for ordering. Do not duplicate numbers. This number is used to refer to the Segmentation using the SegmentationNo parameter in the Feedback and Cohort reports
- Choose a Segmentation Group if you wish to filter by Group in your reports
- Choose a color if you wish to override the normal rating based the color scheme on graphics.
Segmentation Groups
- Give the Segmentation Group a name. This name is internal to the system
- Number the Segmentation for ordering. Do not duplicate numbers. This number is used to refer to the Segmentation Group using the SegG parameter in the Feedback and Cohort reports.
