Stacked Bar and Column Charts are specifically designed for, and only available for reporting counts of responses in a cohort, with the bar split by Rating. The most common example is showing the distribution of responses by how they answered.
Normally you will need to set up a Rating Type (using advanced ratings) to overlay the answer scores, either exactly, or with groupings. In the example below, we set up three ratings
- A rating named Always/Usually with a maximum of 100% - Always will be 100% and Usually 80%
- A Rating named Sometimes with a maximum of 60%. Sometimes will always be 60%.
- A Rating named Never/Occasionally with a maximum of 40%. Occasionally will be 40% and Never 20%.
If you want to separate all of the answers (in a Likert scored question) you would have 5 ratings with a maximum of 100%,80%,60%,40%, and 20%.
TIP: if the Count or CountPC splits aren't correctly displayed on the stacked bar (for example the total adding to 99% instead of 100%), it could be related to how your rating is set up. You could try updating them from a whole number to decimals, for example:
- maximum of 40 would be 39.99 or 40.01
- maximum of 60 would be 59.99 or 60.01
- maximum of 80 would be 79.99 or 80.01
When creating the merge string in the Cohort report, it must include (from the list below):
- the Rating Type created for the ratings.
- Metric=Count or CountPC.
Below is an example of a Stacked Bar using the above structure.
As shown in the example above, you can group Stacked bars. The grouping of bars can be for:
- Sections
- Subsections
- Questions
- Segmentations within a segmentation Group
- Split by Report Identifier / Role for a single Section/SubSection/Question/Segmentation
- Split by Classifier for a single Section/SubSection/Question/Segmentation
- Split by Iteration for a single Section/SubSection/Question/Segmentation
A note regarding 360's
Often in 360's you have two versions of every question, one for the subject, and one for the people rating the subject. Reporting by Question will show both questions.
A workaround for this is to use Segmentations. You would name the segmentation after the Question, and Group them by a Group named after the Subsection. Both related questions would be linked to the segmentation. The Report will, instead of being for the questions, be for segmentations, filtered by the Subsection named Segmentation Group. They will appear exactly the same on the report.

Options | |||
| How to | Using the Merge Manager | Parameter | Notes |
| Show Count of responses in the selection within a cohort | From "Display" select Count | Metric=Count | Show the number of respondents that selected each answer in the cohort. |
| Show percentage of each selection in a cohort | From "Display" select CountPC | Metric=CountPC | Show the percentage of respondents in the selection within a cohort |
| Use ratings from an Advanced rating type. | From "Rating Type" choose the Rating Type to be used. | RatingType=n | n=Rating Type ID from Advanced ratings screen. |
| Show the score on each mark (percentage or actual score). |
From "Options" choose Display Labels. From "Display Labels" select Labels. |
Label=Y | Labels show the mark value in the Display Format (percentages or actual scores). |
| Show decimals on the score (both the label, if one is shown and the size of the mark) |
From "Options" choose Set the Decimals. In "Decimals" enter the number of decimal places. |
Decimals=n | The number of decimal places for the Axis and the label (if any) |
| Select the Font for the Legends and Labels | From "Options" choose Font. From "Font" select the required font. |
Font=[name] | The fonts available are listed in the Merge Manager. If they have a space in the name it is replaced by an underscore. |
| Select the Font Size for the Legends and Labels | From "Options" choose Font Size. In "Font Size" enter the required font size in points. |
FontSize=n | n = the font size in points. |
| Select the Bar Thickness overriding the system default (which is based on the available space) | From "Options" choose Bar Thickness. In "Bar Thickness" enter the required font size in points. |
BarSize=n | n = the thickness of the par in pixels. Between 20-40 is typical. 30 is average. For Horizontal (bar) charts only this will override the Height parameter. The system will calculate the space required for the bars, plus an allowance for the Axis and Legend (if any) |
| Select the Background color for the chart, or make it transparent | From "Options" choose Background. In "Background" enter the Color code (#nnnnnn) or "null" if a transparent background is required |
Background=#CCCCCCC | #CCCCCCC = the Color code (#nnnnnn) or "null" if a transparent background is required. eg #FFFFFF = white. |
| Set the Label Color | From "Options" choose Label color. In "Specify Label Color" enter the color code in the format #nnnnnn. |
LabelColor=#CCCCCCC | #CCCCCCC = the Color code (#nnnnnn) for the Label (score). |
| Set the Axis Colors for the chart | From "Options" choose "Axis Color" In "Axis Color" enter the Hex code for the colors, separated by a comma. |
AxisColor=#FFFFFF | |
| Don't show the Title | From "Options" choose Title Rules. From "Title Rules" select None. |
Title=N | No Title is shown (this is the section / subsection / question / answer name shown under/beside each bar) |
| Don't show the Y-Axis | From "Options" choose Y Axis Rules. From "Y Axis Rules" select None. |
YAxis=N | The Y Axis is not shown (this is the percentages or numbers for Likert Scores) |
| Set the height of the graphic (overriding the default) |
From "Options" choose Height. In "Height" enter the height required in pixels. |
Height=nnn | The height of the graphic. If the Width is not specified the system will calculate the width proportionately. The default height is 300 pixels. |
| Set the Width of the graphic (overriding the default) |
From "Options" choose Width. In "Width" enter the width required in pixels. |
Width=nnn | The Width of the graphic. If the Height is not specified the system will use the default height. The default width is 600 pixels. |
| Set the maximum value of the Score Axis. |
From "Options" choose Set the Y Axis Maximum. In "Set the Y Axis Maximum" enter the maximum value. |
YAxisMax=n | The Y (Vertical) axis maximum value. |
| Set the increment of the Score Axis. |
From "Options" choose Set the Y Axis Increment. In "Set the Y Axis Increment" enter the increment value (e.g. 1). |
YAxisInc=n | The Y (Vertical) axis increment of the tick marks. |
| Specify the Colors for the chart |
From "Options" choose Set the chart colors. In "Set the chart colors" enter the Hex code for the colors, separated by a comma. |
Chartcolors=#CCCCCC,#F0F0F0 | Specify the hex code for the colors for the chart, separated by a comma. They will be used in the order they appear. If there are more marks than colors, the defaults will be used. |
| Set the margins. |
From 'Options', choose 'Left Margin', 'Right Margin', 'Top Margin', and/or 'Bottom Margin'. Then select an appropriate width in pixels. |
MarginLeft=n MarginRight=n MarginTop=n MarginBottom=n |
This overrides the defaults in the system, and is useful for either allowing more space (or a consistent space) for axis text, or to remove or reduce the spacing that the chart includes by default. |
