Pro Tip: If you update the Benchmark Label against the classifier, then you'll need to go into the Assessment Settings, scroll to the bottom of the General tab and click 'Save' for the update to take effect and display the updated Benchmark Label in your reporting.
This video provides a detailed guide on Seeded Benchmarks in Brilliant Assessments, explaining how to create and implement them for assessment Classifiers.
Seeded Benchmarks allow you to:
- Compare responses against predefined benchmark values.
- Set different expectations based on classifier values (e.g., years of service).
- Upload benchmarks via a CSV file.
Creating a Classifier
To set up Seeded Benchmarks, you must first create a classifier.
- Navigate to "Classifiers" in Brilliant Assessments.
- Click “Create New Classifier”.
- Name the classifier (e.g., Years of Service).
- Assign a Classifier ID (used for report merge strings).
- Enable Benchmarks and select Seeded as the calculation type.
- Enter a label for reports (use
{Classifier}in curly brackets to default to the classifier name). - Set Benchmark Minimum Values (minimum responses required to generate a benchmark).
- Click Save.
Linking the Classifier
You can link your classifier in two ways:
Option 1: Linking to a Specific Question
- Navigate to Options and select the classifier.
- Mark the question as required to ensure all classifiers are captured.
- Save your changes.
Option 2: Linking at the Assessment Level
- Navigate to Assessment Settings.
- Link the classifier to provide an overall benchmark across all responses.
- This method compares the average of all responses rather than filtering by classifier values.
Preparing the Seeded Benchmark Spreadsheet
Download the template spreadsheet from the classifier settings.
Retain the top row (overall assessment score benchmark).
Ensure Columns F and G are populated (use "1" if unsure).
-
Fill in:
- Benchmark Answer Column (for question-specific benchmarks; leave blank for assessment-wide benchmarks).
- Section, Subsection, and Segmentation (leave blank if only benchmarking at the section level).
- Percentage Score and Answer Points (both must be completed).
-
If adding a Likert Score:
- Convert percentage score to a decimal (e.g., 100% = 1.0).
- Multiply by 5 for a 5-point scale (
F2 * 5). - Multiply by 10 for a 10-point scale.
Save the file as a CSV (comma-delimited).
Uploading the Benchmark File
- Go back to your classifier settings.
- Click Upload Benchmark File.
- Select the rating for the benchmark.
- Upload your CSV file.
- The Seeded Benchmarks are now active in your assessment!
Updating Seeded Benchmarks
If you need to update benchmarks later:
- Download the existing CSV file.
- Make your changes.
- Re-upload the updated file.
